Khurram is a Partner based in the Middle East with specialist knowledge of the Kingdom of Saudia Arabia, with a particular focus on ports and terminals, logistics, maritime, transportation, oil & gas and international trade matters.
With nearly two decades of experience, Khurram provides advice to a wide range of clients, including governmental entities, terminal operators, port owners, concessionaires, logistics owners, shipowners, charterers, P&I Clubs, traders and offshore operators/shipowners. Notably, he has dedicated almost a decade to advising clients in Saudi on issues related to KSA and English law, as well as the laws of other GCC states.
He primarily specialises in dispute resolution concerning a wide range of issues relating to terminal services agreements, leases, concession agreements, debt recovery, charterparty, commodities sale and purchase contracts and COA disputes including seaworthiness, off-hire, withdrawal from hire, safe port/berth, early redelivery, off-spec bunkers, as well as ship arrests, general average, groundings, collisions/allisions and cargo claims.
Clients benefit from Khurram’s extensive experience in handling various disputes in the KSA, the High Court in London, and courts in the UAE, as well as international arbitrations under the LMAA, ICC, AAA, LCIA, and DIAC rules.
Khurram was one of the lead partners instructed by a government body in Saudi Arabia to regulate and promote sustainable development along the Red Sea coastline. He played a key role in drafting comprehensive rules and implementing regulations for a tourist marina in the Red Sea. His role involved extensive research and benchmarking to ensure adherence to global standards, leading to the creation of 12 regulations covering key areas such as marine tour operator oversight, cruise ship operations, large yacht charters, marina design and management, private yacht protocols, maritime tourism agent guidelines, and watercraft classification.
Prior to joining Stephenson Harwood, Khurram was at another leading international law firm based initially in Dubai before moving to Riyadh to set up and head their shipping practice in the KSA. Before that, he worked for a major International Group P&I Club advising their members on all aspects of FD&D and P&I claims. He was also a part-time lecturer in law at the University of Westminster in London.
